Waṭan (English spelling)

Japanese: ワタン（英語表記）waṭan

An Arabic word meaning "homeland" or "fatherland." One of the basic concepts related to modern Arab politics and culture. Through the establishment and development of modern Arab nationalism, qawm has come to mean "nation" formed on the basis of religion, language, and culture, while watan has come to refer to "nation" formed historically and socially, and "land" as the place of their life and movement. The issues of Wataniya (Watanism) as nationalism based on watan are particularly important to Egyptians and Palestinians.

〈郷土〉あるいは〈祖国〉を意味するアラビア語。近代アラブの政治や文化にかかわる基本概念の一つ。近代のアラブ民族主義の成立と展開を通じてカウムqawmが宗教や言語･文化に基づいて形成される〈民族〉という意味を与えられるようになってきたのに対し，ワタンは歴史的･社会的に形成された〈国民〉とその生活および運動の場としての〈国土〉を指すようになった。ワタンに基礎を置く民族主義としてのワタニーヤ(ワタン主義)の課題は，エジプト人やパレスティナ人が特に重視するところである。
