Paper container - Shiki

Japanese:
Paper container - Shiki

A general term for paper containers to put items in. In addition to square paper boxes such as cosmetic boxes and cardboard boxes, there are also round ones such as paper cups and paper tubes, and paper bags made from kraft paper. Paper containers were originally only used to put and transport solid items, but with improvements in the raw paper and in paper container manufacturing technology, they have become used to protect, store, and transport products as containers for powders and liquids, streamlining the process. Furthermore, the types of paper containers have become more diverse as various processes such as coating and printing are used to promote and manage products.

Base paper for paper containers

Western paper and paperboard are made from selected raw pulp depending on the application of the paper container, and the main types are listed below. White paperboard is paperboard with a white pulp surface, and is available in coated and uncoated versions. It is used not only for boxes for tableware and miscellaneous goods, but also for a wide variety of paper containers. Ivory, in particular, is paperboard made from 100% bleached virgin pulp, and is used as the base paper for milk cartons, etc., where food comes into direct contact with the container. Card paper is paperboard with bleached chemical pulp on the surface and back, and a white recycled paper core, and is used as the base paper for boxes and paper tubes for sweets and miscellaneous goods. Kraft paper is made from unbleached kraft pulp, and is strong, so it is used as the base paper for kraft bags, etc. Kraft liner and semi-core paper have excellent tensile strength and bursting strength, and are relatively inexpensive, so they are used as the base paper for the surface layer (liner) and core (corrugated medium) of cardboard.

Special paper containers

(1) Bag-in-carton: A bag with moisture-resistant and water-resistant properties is placed inside a paper box, and is used as a container for hygroscopic powders, etc.

(2) Paper cups In addition to those made simply of paper, there are also those laminated with aluminum foil, plastic, etc. They also come in various shapes such as tumbler-shaped, bottle-shaped, and cylindrical.

(3) Composite cans: Cans made by simply spirally or flat-wrapping paperboard or paperboard laminated with aluminum foil or plastic, then cutting the material into pieces to form the body, and using metal, plastic, or paperboard for the lid and bottom. They come in a range of sizes, from small to large, and with recent improvements in strength, moisture resistance, and other properties, they are used to hold medicines, powdered cheese, fruit juice, etc.

(4) Milk cartons are liquid cartons, paper boxes for milk, fruit juice, sake, etc., and are made from moisture-resistant, water-resistant, and air-tight paper laminated with aluminum, polyester, etc. There are pre-cut types, which are cut and shaped in advance by paper container companies, and post-form types, which are filled with the contents while cutting and shaping the base paper at milk plants, etc.

Recently, demand for paper containers has grown rapidly due to improvements in their performance and the convenience of one-way containers. Meanwhile, if research and development progresses in the disposal of discarded paper containers and in technology for recycling pulp from recovered paper containers, the demand for paper containers is likely to expand further.
