A saint and bishop of Maastricht, later Liège. According to legend, he was a secular nobleman who went hunting on Easter day, had a vision of a cross between the antlers of a deer, and was converted (borrowed from a similar legend of the ancient Roman martyr Saint Eustace). He then worked hard to spread Christianity in the Ardennes region. He is the patron saint of hunters and foresters, and is said to calm rabies. In artwork, he is depicted as a hunter with a dog or a deer, or as a bishop, and scenes from the legend, such as the vision of the cross and his inauguration as bishop, are depicted.

マーストリヒト，のちリエージュの司教で聖人。伝説によれば，世俗の貴族であったが，復活祭の日に狩りに行ったところ，一頭の鹿の角の間に十字架を幻視し改心したという(古代ローマの殉教聖人エウスタキウスの同様の伝説からの借用)。以後アルデンヌ地方での布教に努めた。狩人，山林官などの守護聖人で，狂犬病を鎮めるとされる。美術作品では，犬や鹿を連れた狩人または司教としてあらわされ，伝説から十字架を幻視する場面，司教に就任する場面などが表現される。
