655 koro-727 A saint and bishop of Maastricht, later Liège. According to legend, he was a secular nobleman who went hunting on Easter day, had a vision of a cross between the antlers of a deer, and was converted (borrowed from a similar legend of the ancient Roman martyr Saint Eustace). He then worked hard to spread Christianity in the Ardennes region. He is the patron saint of hunters and foresters, and is said to calm rabies. In artwork, he is depicted as a hunter with a dog or a deer, or as a bishop, and scenes from the legend, such as the vision of the cross and his inauguration as bishop, are depicted.
