Cape Wadamisaki

Japanese: 和田岬 - わだみさき
Cape Wadamisaki

A cape jutting out into the Seto Inland Sea in Hyogo Ward, southern Kobe City. The sand spit was formed by the accumulation of sediment carried by coastal currents from the areas of Shioya and Tarumi, and is shaped as if it embraces Hyogo Port, which occupies the western part of Kobe Port. Since the Meiji period, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Kobe Shipyard and related factories have been located on the cape, and it is now part of the Hanshin Industrial Zone. Within the premises of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries is the Wadamisaki Battery (a national historic site). It was built in 1864 (Genji 1) by the Edo Shogunate for coastal defense purposes.
