Playwright. Born in Tokyo. Graduated from the Department of Japanese Literature at Keio University. His work "One Night," published in 1933 (Showa 8), premiered at the Tsukiji Theater in the same year, marking his debut as a playwright. In 1935, "Fubuki Toge" premiered with Ichikawa Sadanji II and "Kodan Yomiya no Ame" with Onoe Kikugoro VI, and he was active thereafter mainly as a writer of new kabuki plays. His "Sewa Kyogen" plays, which were based on the lives of ordinary Edo citizens, were particularly well-received, coupled with Kikugoro's brilliant performances. After World War II, he wrote and directed works for radio, television, and commercial theater. He was also active in modernizing classics, and in 1953 he adapted and directed Chikamatsu's "Sonezaki Shinju," which was a great success. He was a member of the Japan Art Academy in 1972 and a Person of Cultural Merit in 1985.
