An ancient fortress built in Mutsu Province. It is also called Momonoujo or Momo no Ki. It is also written as Momonou Castle. The ruins are identified with Iino, Kahoku Town, Momonou County, Miyagi Prefecture (present-day Ishinomaki City). It is estimated that construction was planned in 757 and completed in 760 to control the sea road along with Iji Castle, which controlled the mountain roads of Mutsu Province (Shoku Nihongi). It is said that Fujiwara Asakari, who held full administrative and military power in Ouu, put his efforts into the construction of the castle, and vagrants, cavalrymen, pacifists, and barbarian prisoners from Mutsu Province and the various states of Bando were mobilized. In 774, the Emishi (Ezo) on the sea road rebelled, burning the bridge and destroying the western bailey of Momonou Castle. The site is an isolated hill facing the old course of the Kitakami River, and is estimated to be an irregular rectangle measuring 650m east to west and 700m north to south. Traces of an earthwork about 7m wide and 1m high can be seen on parts of the northern, eastern and western sides of the outer enclosure. The eastern enclosure contains an inner enclosure measuring 116m east to west and 72m north to south. Three buildings were discovered in a regular arrangement within the enclosure, and traces of the destruction of two of them have been confirmed. →Castle Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
