[Gravity dam]
A dam is a structure in which the weight of the dam concrete resists the dam's collapse or sliding due to large external forces such as the water pressure of the reservoir or earthquake forces (a 100m high dam would be subjected to a force of about 25,000 tons over a width of just 3.5m). The cross section of the dam is usually a triangle with an upstream face that is nearly vertical and a downstream face with a slope of 0.8 (vertical 1.0 vs. horizontal 0.8).
