A city in the southeastern part of Markazi Province in northern Iran. It lies on a once important caravan route in the desert at the eastern foot of the Iranian Central Mountains, along the southeastern branch of the Trans-Iranian Railway. It is an old city, and 3 km southwest of it is the prehistoric ruins of Tepe Sharq, which has yielded the oldest remains of a settled life on the plateau. It was once a centre of Persian pottery manufacture, exporting decorative pottery and tiles throughout the Middle East, and was especially known for its lusterware. Kashan carpets, the finest quality wool and silk carpets in Iran, are produced here, but modern industry is not very well developed. Population 155,188 (1991).
