Windows NT

Japanese: Windows NT - うぃんどうずえぬてぃー

A 32-bit operating system (OS) for high-performance workstations and server systems developed by Microsoft Corporation in the United States. NT 3.1 was the first version, released in 1993. Its feature is that it allows the use of the Windows environment over a network. It allows complete multitasking (multiple processes can be performed simultaneously) by allocating different memory space to each application, and has security features such as file confidentiality protection. It can also use application software compatible with MS-DOS, Windows, OS/2, and UNIX. Several improved versions of NT were released afterwards, but NT 4.0, released in 1996, was the final version, and Microsoft's support for it ended in 2004.

Windows NT

Operating systems that follow the Windows NT architecture (basic design) are called the Windows NT family, and are the mainstream family of Windows OS today. The NT family was succeeded by Windows 2000 from NT 4.0, the final version of NT, in 2000, and then by Windows XP in 2001, which merged with the Windows 9x family. In 2006, it was succeeded by Windows Vista, which was designed with tablet devices in mind, and was upgraded to Windows 7 in 2009, Windows 8 in 2012, and Windows 8.1 in 2013, while improving management functions and application software.

アメリカのマイクロソフト社が開発した高性能ワークステーションおよびサーバー・システム向けの32ビットオペレーティングシステム（OS）。1993年に発売されたNT 3.1が最初のバージョンである。Windowsの環境をネットワーク上で利用できるのが特長。アプリケーションごとに異なるメモリー空間を割り当てるため完全なマルチタスク処理（複数の処理を同時に行うこと）が可能で、ファイルの秘密保持などセキュリティ機能をもつ。MS-DOS、Windows、OS/2、UNIXに対応するアプリケーション・ソフトも利用できる。NTの改良版はその後いくつか出されたが、1996年発売のNT 4.0が最終バージョンとなり、2004年にはマイクロソフト社のサポートが終了した。

Windows NT系

Windows NTのアーキテクチャー（基本設計）の流れをくむOSは、Windows NT系とよばれ、現在のWindows OSの主流系統となっている。NT系は、2000年にNTの最終バージョンであるNT 4.0から、Windows 2000へと引き継がれ、さらに2001年にはWindows XPでWindows 9x系と統合。2006年にはタブレット端末をも意識したWindows Vista(ビスタ)へと引き継がれ、管理機能、アプリケーションソフトを充実しながら、2009年Windows 7、2012年Windows 8、2013年Windows 8.1へとバージョンアップしている。
