This area is located on the northern edge of Shinjuku Ward, Tokyo, south of the Kanda River. The names of the towns include Waseda-cho, Waseda Tsurumaki-cho, Waseda Minami-cho, and Nishi-Waseda. The lowlands were once rice paddy areas, as can be seen from the origins of the place names. It is known throughout Japan for the name of Waseda University (then Tokyo Senmon Gakko, renamed in 1902), which was founded here in 1882 (Meiji 15) by Okuma Shigenobu. Near Waseda Station on the Toden Arakawa Line are Kansen-en Park, Mizuinari Shrine, and the Horibe Yasubei (1670-1703) Vengeance Monument. On the plateau west of Waseda Station on the Tokyo Metro Tozai Line is Anahachiman-gu, and there is Nekozuka (Cat's mound) at the site of Soseki's temple in Waseda Minami-cho to the southeast.
