"Kanto Koroku no Chi Hinagata" - Kanto Koroku no Chi Hinagata

The first of these is said to be "Awashima Sono no Take" performed at the Edo Ichimura Theater in the leap July of 1759 (9th year of the Horeki era), which is recorded in the "Chronology of Modern Japanese Music," and is said to be about Ichimura Kamezo's Kanto Koroku who becomes an Awashima gannin and enters the red-light district, where he engages in romantic relations with the prostitute Ogishi, played by the first Nakamura Tomijuro. The next was "Kanto Koroku no Chi no Hinagata" performed at the Ichimura Theater in the autumn of 1770 (7th year of the Meiwa era), in which Ichimura Kamezo's Tanbaya Shichirobei (Tanshichi) enters the red-light district as an Awashima gannin and engages in romantic relations with Otoha, played by Nakamura Kiyosaburo. The work by Otowa Tanshichi was adapted from an incident that occurred in July 1731 (Kyoho 16), when Tanbaya Kurobei and the prostitute Otowa of Hyogoya attempted a double suicide but failed, violating the edict banning double suicides and being publicly displayed in Nihonbashi for three days.

…　その最初とされるのは《近世邦楽年表》の中に記されている1759年(宝暦9)閏7月江戸市村座上演の《粟島園生竹（あわしまそのうのたけ）》で，市村亀蔵の関東小六が淡島願人となって廓へ入り込み，初世中村富十郎の遊女大岸と恋の所作をするというのが内容らしい。続いては70年(明和7)秋市村座で上演された《関東小六後雛形（かんとうころくのちのひながた）》で，市村亀蔵の丹波屋七郎兵衛(丹七)が淡島願人となって廓へ入り込み，中村喜代三郎の扮する音羽と恋を語るという形で上演された。丹波屋九郎兵衛と兵庫屋の遊女音羽が心中を謀って失敗し，心中禁止の令にふれ日本橋で3日間晒し者にされたという1731年(享保16)7月の事件に基づいて脚色されたのが〈音羽丹七〉の作品である。…
