This refers to wild plants of the rice genus Oryza . Currently, about 20 species are known in the world, and they grow wild in tropical and subtropical regions of Asia, Africa, Oceania, and Central and South America. The two cultivated types of rice are believed to have originated from some of these wild rice species. The widely cultivated rice (Asian rice) O. sativa L. is believed to have originated from O. perennis Moench, while the African rice (O. glaberrima Steud.), which is cultivated in limited areas of Africa, is believed to have originated from O. breviligulata Chev.et Roehr. はO.breviligulata Chev.et Roehr.
