A tribe that lives in the northwestern mountainous region of Luzon in the Philippines, and whose native language is Tinguian. They have a population of about 30,000. They are known as a tribe that once practiced headhunting. The name Tinguian comes from the Malay word tinggi (meaning "mountain"), and was first used by the Spaniards as the official name of the tribe. The Tinguian themselves call themselves Itneg (meaning "from the interior"). They are generally divided into two groups: Highland Tinguian and Valley Tinguian. The former are scattered from the eastern and northern parts of Abra Province to the highlands of the southern part of Ilocos Norte Province. ティンギアン自身は自分たちをイトネッグItneg(〈奥地の出身者〉の意)と呼ぶ。
