Mini-states

Japanese: ミニステート（英語表記）mini‐states

A ministate is a state with an extremely small territorial area and population. With the exception of Monaco and Liechtenstein, which were historically formed in Europe, most of the ministates were established after World War II in Africa, the South Pacific, and the Indian Ocean region. While great powers have traditionally influenced international politics through the size of their national power, primarily military might, ministates do not have the conditions to have such influence. Nevertheless, it can be said that the influence of ministates in modern international politics is growing.

領土面積，人口がきわめて小さい国家のこと。ヨーロッパにおいて歴史的に形成されてきたモナコ，リヒテンシュタインなどを除くと，ほとんどが第2次大戦後にアフリカと南太平洋，インド洋地域に成立した諸国である。大国が軍事力を中心とする国力の大きさによって伝統的に国際政治に影響を及ぼしてきたのに対し，ミニステートにはそのような影響力をもつ条件は存在しない。にもかかわらず現代の国際政治におけるミニステートの影響力は強まりつつあるといえよう。
