When an electrolyte is added to a hydrophobic sol, colloidal particles aggregate to form larger particles, which then precipitate and settle out. This phenomenon is also called coagulation. This is because the charge on the colloidal particles is neutralized by electrolyte ions with the opposite sign, making them more likely to clump together, and the minimum concentration of electrolyte required to cause coagulation within a certain period of time is lower the greater the ion's charge. In a broader sense, the solidification of hydrophilic sols is also called coagulation.
