Wakil (English spelling)

Japanese: ワキール（英語表記）wakīl

An Arabic word meaning "representative," "guarantor," "agent," "protector," etc. In the Quran, for example, there is the expression "Allah is the guarantor (waqil) of our word" (12:66), and "waqil" is one of the 99 names of Allah. As Islamic society developed, wakil came to be used in various fields, taking into account the general meaning above, while also taking on a specific meaning in each field. For example, in Shiite sect, imams often used personal representatives (waqils) to communicate with their followers.
