Psychosomatic medicine - Shinryokanaka

This is the name of a medical department that mainly treats neuroses and psychosomatic disorders that are primarily physical symptoms, and psychosomatic medical treatment and research are conducted there. This means that in addition to general internal medicine treatment, the department also actively practices psychotherapy (psychotherapy), and it was Kyushu University's School of Medicine that first advertised this. In 1952 (Showa 27), Ikemi Yujiro (1915-99), who studied in the United States, realized the importance of psychosomatic treatment after seeing it in action, and after studying this, he returned to Japan and opened a clinical course in psychosomatic medicine in June 1963. He also established the Department of Psychosomatic Medicine, intending to contrast it with the Department of Physical Therapy (Physical Medicine) that was already advertised at the University of Tokyo's School of Medicine, and became its first professor.

In psychosomatic medicine, paramedical staff (clinical psychologists, social caseworkers, occupational therapists, etc.) assist doctors in the practice of medical treatment, and work in an organic team to provide medical care. Currently, general illnesses in each clinical department are being treated from a comprehensive medical perspective that looks at both the mind and body.

身体症状を中心とする神経症や心身症をおもな対象とする診療科名で、心身医学的な診療および研究が行われている。これは一般の内科的治療ばかりでなく、積極的に心理療法（精神療法）も行う内科という意味で、最初に標榜(ひょうぼう)したのは九州大学医学部である。すなわち、1952年（昭和27）にアメリカへ留学した池見酉次郎(いけみゆうじろう)（1915―99）は心身医学的治療の実際をみてその重要性を痛感し、これを学んで帰朝、1963年6月から精神身体医学（心身医学）の臨床講座を開き、すでに東京大学医学部で標榜していた物療内科（理学診療科）に対比させる意図もあって心療内科を設置、初代教授に就任した。

　心療内科では、医師の助力的立場で診療の実技を行うパラメディカルparamedical（臨床心理士、ソーシャル・ケースワーカー、作業療法士など）の人々が、それぞれ専門的な立場から医師に協力し、有機的なチームワークのもとに診療を行っている。現在では、臨床各科の疾患一般についても広く心身両面からの総合医学的立場から診療が行われるようになってきた。
