A Rinzai sect monk active from the Northern and Southern Courts to the Muromachi period. A native of Mino (Gifu Prefecture), his posthumous name was Buttoku Daido Zenji. He became a monk under Muso Soseki at the age of 13, and in 1341 travelled to Yuan Dynasty China to study under Sokukyu Keiryo, inheriting his teachings. After returning to Japan, he established the Guchu school, and in 1365 became the chief priest of Tennei-ji Temple (now the Myoshinji school) in Tango (Kyoto Prefecture). In 1397, he also founded Buttsu-ji Temple (now the head temple of the Buttsu-ji school) in Aki (Hiroshima), making it the second main temple of the Guchu school. In 14th Oei, he was invited by Shogun Ashikaga Yoshimochi to lecture on the essentials of Zen. <Works> "Rinmeisho" <References> "Nenpu of Buttoku Daido Zenji"

南北朝から室町時代にかけて活躍した臨済宗の僧。美濃(岐阜県)の人。諡号は仏徳大通禅師。13歳で夢窓疎石の下に出家,暦応4/興国2(1341)年,元に渡り即休契了に師事し,その法を嗣いだ。帰国して愚中派を興し,貞治4/正平20(1365)年に丹後(京都府)の天寧寺(現妙心寺派)の住持。また応永4(1397)年には安芸(広島)に仏通寺(現仏通寺派本山)を開創して愚中派の二本寺とした。応永14年,将軍足利義持に招かれ,禅要を説く。<著作>『稟明鈔』<参考文献>『仏徳大通禅師年譜』
