Wakato Bridge

Japanese:
Wakato Bridge

This large suspension bridge on National Route 199 spans Dokai Bay, straddling Wakamatsu and Tobataku wards in Kitakyushu. It is 2,068 meters long (680 meters for the suspension bridge section, 367 meters for the central span), 15 meters wide, and 42 meters clear (large ships can pass through). It was opened in 1962 (Showa 37) as a toll road bridge built by the Japan Highway Public Corporation to replace the existing ferry in order to modernize traffic in both the Wakamatsu and Tobata sections and to ease congestion in and out of the bay. There was a roadway and a sidewalk, but the sidewalk was abolished in 1984 due to the expansion of the roadway. On the Tobata side, it connects to Kitakyushu Expressway Route 2. A city-run passenger ferry still runs directly underneath. In 2012, the Wakato Tunnel (Shin-Wakato Road), an undersea tunnel built to alleviate traffic congestion on the Wakato Bridge, was opened.
