"The Year of the Dog Satomi Eight Ripe Plums" - Utterly Doshisha and Mino Yatsufusa

...On the occasion of the Edo premiere, Bakin wrote in a letter to a friend that "Edo playwrights are so stricken with their failures that they turn the modern readings and other such works into kyogen plays," but in those days, dramatizing a novel was considered to affect a playwright's reputation. Furthermore, in leap April 1903, Edo Ichimuraza's Atarido Satomi no Yatsufusa (7 acts, written by Nakamura Jyusuke) also drew a large audience, but was praised for "the superior adaptation of the previous version." Then, in January 1852 (Kaei 5), Ichimura-za's "Legend of the Eight Satomi Dogs" (7 acts, written by Sakurada Jisuke III) featured a new script that included the story of Shino through to Konaya, as well as Taigyourou and Toyama (a Tomimoto-bushi rendition of the female Narukami), which was well received and became the basis for the compilation of a set edition.
