Suzumenoteppou (English spelling) short awn foxtail

An annual or biennial plant of the grass family (APG classification: Poaceae). The culm is erect, 20-40 cm tall, and the leaves are 5-15 cm long. From March to June, a cylindrical panicle with dense spikelets grows at the top of the culm. The spikelet is broadly ovate and significantly flattened from both sides, and contains one floret. The glumes are fused at the base, and the keel has long hairs. The glumes are slightly longer than the glumes, with bluntly pointed tips, and the midribs are erect, terminating in awns 0.3 mm long. The glumes and lodices are degenerate. Grows in wetlands and fields. Widely distributed in temperate zones of the Northern Hemisphere, from Hokkaido to Okinawa. The two varieties are sometimes divided into two categories: the one with slightly smaller spikelets that grows in fields is called Nohara Suzume-no-Heppo, and the one with larger spikelets that grows in wetlands and rice paddies is called Suzume-no-Heppo.
