Gonepteryx maxima (mountain yellow butterfly)

Japanese: ヤマキチョウ(山黄蝶) - ヤマキチョウ（英語表記）Gonepteryx maxima

An insect of the Lepidoptera order, Pieridae family. A medium-sized butterfly with a wingspan of about 6.5 cm, there is almost no difference in size between males and females. It is distributed throughout eastern Eurasia, but in Japan it is found only in parts of the northeastern part of Honshu, and in the mountainous and plateau areas of Nagano, Yamanashi, and their neighboring prefectures. The upper surface of the wings is bright yellow in males and white in females, with an orange spot in the center of both the forewings and hindwings. The undersides of the wings are pale green in both sexes. They emerge once a year in July or August, and overwinter as adults. They resume activity in late spring, and females continue to lay eggs even in July.
