The main island of Trinidad and Tobago, located at the southeastern tip of the West Indies. It has an area of 4,828 km2. Tectonically, it is part of the South American continent. There is a mountain range running east-west in the north, but the rest of the island is flat. The highest peak is Mount Aripo (940m) in the north. The island has a hot tropical climate all year round, but the northeast trade winds and sea breezes make it relatively bearable. The oil industry is the main driver, and sugar cane, coffee, and cocoa cultivation is also thriving. It has been a long-standing tourist destination and is famous as a winter resort. It is also known for Pitch Lake in the southwest. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
