Toyoda Mitsugi

Japanese:
Toyoda Mitsugi
Year of death: 12/5/1829 (12/30/1829)
Year of birth: 1774
She was a central figure in the Osaka Christian Incident, an incident in which Christians were cracked down on in the Kyoto and Osaka region during the late Edo period. Born in Etchu Province (Toyama Prefecture), she worked as a maid and prostitute before marrying the onmyoji Saito Iori in Kyoto. However, she was abandoned by her husband and stayed at the home of an acquaintance, where she learned about Mizuno Gunki, who taught her the secret teachings of Tentei Nyorai, and she is said to have imparted these teachings to a female disciple in a similar situation. On the surface, they made a living by selling Inari shrines, but in 1827, one of their female disciples was involved in a fraud case, and Mitsugu and his friends came to light, leading to their arrest. During a council, doubts were raised as to whether they were Christians, but for political reasons, the shogunate crucified them as Christians. One of the deputies at the Osaka Higashimachi Magistrate's Office who investigated them was Oshio Heihachiro. Mitsugu was said to have been in high spirits until the time of his execution. The fact that he was a proud and irritable person can also be seen from the sentence in another case in 1824. <References> Koda Shigetomo, "Oshio Heihachiro"; Miyagi Kimiko, "Oshio Heihachiro"
