The old name of the Canadian province of Quebec. It was used from 1791 to 1841. It means the area along the lower St. Lawrence River. In 1763, Great Britain named the North American colony it inherited from France Quebec. After the American Revolution, many Loyalists came to Quebec and formed a separate society from French Canadians around Lake Ontario. They did not like being governed by the Quebec Act, so in 1791 the British government divided the area into two colonies, Upper Canada and Lower Canada.
