Daiunji Temple

Japanese: 大雲寺 - だいうんじ
Daiunji Temple
An independent temple of the Tendai sect in Sakyo Ward, Kyoto City, it is also called Iwakura-ji, Kannon-in, or Iwakura Kannon. The principal image is the Eleven-Headed Kannon. It was founded in 971 by Hino Bunhan as a branch temple of Onjo-ji Temple, and was founded by Shingaku, whose miraculous tales are recorded in the Nihon Ojo Gokurakuki. It is said that originally there was a large temple, but it later fell into decline, and in the early modern period, it was restored by Gison, the head priest of Jisso-in, with the support of Emperor Gomizunoo and Tofukumon'in. The bronze bell, which has the inscription dated 858 and is recorded in the Kyuuki Daicho, a record of the temple throughout the early modern period, was originally owned by Enryaku-ji Saihodo-in, but was donated by Emperor Gomizunoo and is designated as a national treasure. The bronze bell is currently housed at the Jotenkaku Museum.
