Sakura [city] - Sakura

Japanese: 佐倉[市] - さくら
Sakura [city] - Sakura
A city in the northern part of Chiba Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1954. It occupies part of the Shimousa Plateau, and the northern part is a low marshland facing Lake Inba. The city center developed as a castle town in the early modern period and as a post town on the Sakura Highway, and also prospered as a place to collect and distribute Sakura coal and konjac. Since the Meiji period, an army infantry regiment has been stationed here. It declined after World War II, but has recovered with the development of housing estates and industrial complexes for electrical and general equipment. Furthermore, with the opening of New Tokyo International Airport (now Narita International Airport) in Narita City in 1978, advanced technology industries have also moved into the area as an airport-side industrial complex. The city is served by the Sobu Main Line, Keisei Main Line, and Higashi-Kanto Expressway, and many people commute to Chiba and Tokyo. Rural areas produce rice, sweet potatoes, and peanuts. The National Museum of Japanese History opened on the site of Sakura Castle in 1983. The Great East Japan Earthquake caused damage in the city. The area was 103.69 km2 . The population was 172,183 (2010).
