The name used by Chinese people from the Northern and Southern Dynasties to the Tang dynasty to refer to the eastern territories of the Roman Empire, such as Syria and Palestine, or to the Byzantine capital of Constantinople. It is likely a Chinese transliteration of the Iranian word for Rome, Frōm, or the Altaic language, Purum. It is also expressed by characters such as フ浪, フ盧ニ, and フ懍. Later, it was also used to refer to western place names with similar sounds, such as Khulm in northern Afghanistan and Farang (Europe). Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
