A city in the central-southern part of Gunma Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1958. It occupies the basin of the Usui River and its tributaries, and the northern part is hilly. It borders Takasaki City to the west, and Usui Pass is located on the western border with Nagano Prefecture. The central city is on a plateau on the left bank of the Usui River, and is a town and village. It developed as a castle town of the Itakura clan, a post town on the Nakasendo road, and a market town, and Itahana in the east was also a post town on the Nakasendo road. It is connected to the Shinetsu Main Line and the Joshinetsu Expressway. There is a large zinc smelting plant on the hills south of Annaka Station, which caused a pollution problem (1971) due to cadmium contamination in the wastewater. There is a chemical plant in Isobe on the right bank of the Usui River, and an industrial park is also being developed. There is a large Akima plum grove in the north, and Isobe Onsen in the west. It is the birthplace of Niijima Jo, the founder of Doshisha University, and his former house is open to the public. In March 2006, Matsuida Town, Usui County, was incorporated. Area: 276.31 ^km2 . Population: 61,077 (2010).

群馬県中南部の市。1958年市制。碓氷(うすい)川とその支流の流域を占め，北部は丘陵地。高崎市の西に接し，西側の長野県境には碓氷峠がある。中心市街は碓氷川左岸の台地上にあって街村状をなし，板倉氏の城下町，中山道の宿場町，市場町として，また東部の板鼻も中山道の宿場町として発展。信越本線，上信越自動車道が通じる。安中駅南側の丘陵に大規模な亜鉛製錬工場があり，排水に含まれるカドミウム汚染の公害問題（1971年）をおこした。碓氷川右岸の磯部には化学工場があり，工業団地も造成されている。北部には大規模な秋間梅林，西部には磯部温泉がある。同志社大学の創立者新島襄の出身地で，旧宅が公開されている。2006年３月碓氷郡松井田町を編入。276.31km²。６万1077人（2010）。
