Kasuga-zukuri

This is a style of shrine main hall seen at the main hall of Kasuga Taisha Shrine in Nara. It is a gabled-roofed building with a hidden eaves on the front. As they are generally small-scale, many are built on foundations. The correct method is to attach both ends of the eaves on the front to the gable boards on the gable of the main building, creating a gabled roof, but there are also some that have corner beams on both front corners and turn the eaves in a hip-and-gable style, the latter of which is called Kasuga-style with corner beams.

奈良の春日大社本殿にみられるような神社本殿の形式。切妻(きりづま)造、妻入りの建物の前面に階隠(はしかくし)の庇(ひさし)をつけた形になる。一般に小規模になるため、土台建てが多い。前面の庇の両端は本体の妻の破風(はふ)板に取り付けて、縋(すがる)破風の屋根になるのが正規の手法であるが、正面両隅に隅木(すみき)を入れて軒を入母屋(いりもや)風に回すものもあり、後者を隅木入り春日造と呼び分けている。
