A city in the Morbihan department in western France. Population 59,189 (1999). Located on the southern coast of Brittany, it has a natural harbor formed by the mouth of the Blavet and Scorff rivers. The port is one of France's leading fishing and commercial ports. It also functions as a military port, with a naval base and arsenal, and is home to industries such as steel, machinery, canning, and shipbuilding. In the 17th century, under the reign of Louis XIII, the town was founded under the name Port-Louis, and in 1664 the East India Company established its base here, giving the city its name L'Orient, meaning "East (Orient)". During World War II, it became a German submarine base, and most of the city was destroyed by Allied bombing.
