Ralegh (Raleigh), Sir Walter
Born: circa 1552. Haisburton, Devon
[Died] October 29, 1618, London. British soldier, maritime explorer, courtier, and man of letters. A typical Elizabethan Renaissance man. From 1578 to 1579, he participated in the voyages of his half-brother H. Gilbert. He gained the favor of Elizabeth I because of his criticism of Irish policy, and was knighted in 1584. There is a famous legend that he spread his expensive cloak through the mud to let the Queen through. From 1584 to 1685, he explored North America, naming northern Florida Virginia after the Virgin Queen Elizabeth, and attempted to colonize it, but failed. In 1687, he became the captain of the Guard. In 1592, he lost the Queen's favor and was briefly imprisoned, but was released soon after, and in 1595, he explored the Orinoco River in South America. In 1596, he followed the 2nd Earl of Essex and raided Cadiz. During the reign of James I, he was imprisoned for his involvement in the rebellion of 1603, and wrote The History of the World (1614) while in prison. He was released in 1616 and attempted to explore the Orinoco River again, but failed. On the way back, he was executed due to protests from Spain for his violent behavior in Spanish territory. He was a friend of E. Spencer and is also famous as a lyric poet.
