American colonists who were loyal to Great Britain during the American Revolution. They were also called Tories. They are also known as Loyalists. It is said that about one-third of the colonial population was pro-British. They were widely distributed geographically and socially, but they were more numerous in the southern states of Georgia and South Carolina. Loyalists were common among colonial officials under the Royal Governor, clergymen of the Church of England, large landowners, merchants, lawyers, and others, but they were also numerous among poor farmers on the western frontier.
