Turbinia - Turbinia (English)

The world's first steam turbine ship. Designed by Parsons of England, it was built in 1897 to raise public awareness of turbines as a new method of ship propulsion. That same year, at the naval review to commemorate Queen Victoria's 60th year on the throne, the ship demonstrated its power at a then-record speed of 34.5 knots, weaving through the ranks of ships and catching the attention of everyone, including the Queen. The Turbinia had three propellers on each of its three shafts, preventing cavitation (a vacuum phenomenon that occurs at the propellers). As a result of this demonstration, marine turbine engines quickly became popular, starting with warships. It is currently preserved at the Science Museum in Newcastle.
