Romulus Augustulus

The last Western Emperor of the Roman Empire. Reigned 475-476. Date of birth and death unknown. He was installed as Western Emperor in Ravenna at the end of October 475 by his father Orestes, who rebelled against Emperor Nepos, but was not recognized by the Eastern Emperor. After ascending to the throne, he took the name Romulus Augustus, but because he was still a child, he was commonly called Augustulus, a diminutive form of Augustus. In 476, he was dethroned (in September) by Odoacer, who defeated Orestes, but his life was spared due to his childhood and he was allowed to live a pension in Campania.

ローマ帝国最後の西帝。在位475‐476年。生没年不詳。ネポス帝に謀反した父オレステスにより475年10月末日ラベンナで西帝位に擁立されたが，東帝からは承認されなかった。即位後ロムルス･アウグストゥスRomulus Augustusを名のったが，まだ幼少であったためアウグストゥスの指小形アウグストゥルスが俗称となった。476年オレステスを倒したオドアケルによって廃位(9月)されるが，その幼さゆえに助命され，カンパニアで年金生活を送ることを許された。
