Seven Samurai

Japanese film. 1954 (Showa 29). Directed by Akira Kurosawa. During the Warring States period, farmers who were troubled by bandit attacks hire samurai to protect their villages. Seven samurai (Inaba Yoshio, Kato Daisuke, Chiaki Minoru, Miyaguchi Seiji, Kimura Isao, Mifune Toshiro) led by Kanbei (Shimura Takashi) skillfully organize the farmers and fight at the forefront, destroying a group of bandits who attack during the autumn harvest season. Four of the seven are killed in the battle. Kanbei's recollection that "It was the peasants who won, not us" leads to the conclusion that the winners are those who live with the earth, that is, those who produce. The effective use of multiple cameras and telephoto lenses in the battle scenes, along with tight editing, created incredibly dynamic action scenes. Kurosawa's directing skills, which applied the techniques of American Westerns to Japanese period dramas and further enhanced the intensity of the film, earned him worldwide acclaim, and he won the Silver Lion at the Venice Film Festival that same year. This work was also adapted into the American Western The Magnificent Seven (1960), and has spawned many other imitations. It is a period film masterpiece, running 3 hours and 27 minutes, that seamlessly blends high entertainment value with powerful epicness.

日本映画。1954年（昭和29）作品。黒澤明監督。戦国時代、野盗の襲来に悩む農民たちが武士を雇って村を守ろうとする。勘兵衛（志村喬(たかし)）を指揮者とする七人の侍（稲葉義男(よしお)、加東大介(だいすけ)、千秋実(ちあきみのる)、宮口精二、木村功(いさお)、三船敏郎(としろう)）は、農民たちを巧みに組織しながら、先頭にたって戦い、秋の収穫期をねらって襲ってきた野盗の群れを壊滅する。その戦いで7人のうち4人が死ぬ。「勝ったのは百姓たちだ。わしたちではない」という勘兵衛の述懐が、大地とともに生きる人間、つまり生産する人間こそが勝利者であるとする結論になる。戦闘場面では、複数のカメラと望遠レンズの効果的な使用、編集の緊密さによって、すばらしくダイナミックなアクション・シーンを生み出した。アメリカ西部劇の手法を日本の時代劇に生かし、さらに迫力を盛り上げた黒澤監督の演出力は世界的な評価を得、同年のベネチア映画祭で銀獅子(じし)賞を受賞した。また、この作品が翻案されてアメリカ西部劇『荒野の七人』（1960）がつくられたほか、多くの追随作品を生んでいる。優れた娯楽性と力強い叙事詩性とが混然と融合した、3時間27分の時代劇映画の大作である。
