The Kingdom of Aragon in the medieval Iberian Peninsula was founded in 1035 by Ramiro I. It subsequently expanded its territory southward while oppressing Muslims (the Reconquista Wars), and in 1137 became a united kingdom with Catalonia. The two countries shared a ruler without changing their laws or political and administrative systems. In the 13th and 14th centuries, it added Valencia and annexed Sicily, Sardinia, and other territories. In 1479, under Ferdinand II, it merged with the Kingdom of Castile, forming the basis for the unified Spanish state. → Related articles Aragon | Zaragoza | Kingdom of Naples Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
