The Kingdom of Aragon in the medieval Iberian Peninsula was founded in 1035 by Ramiro I. It subsequently expanded its territory southward while oppressing Muslims (the Reconquista Wars), and in 1137 became a united kingdom with Catalonia. The two countries shared a ruler without changing their laws or political and administrative systems. In the 13th and 14th centuries, it added Valencia and annexed Sicily, Sardinia, and other territories. In 1479, under Ferdinand II, it merged with the Kingdom of Castile, forming the basis for the unified Spanish state.

中世イベリア半島のアラゴン王国は1035年ラミロ１世が建国。以後イスラム教徒を圧迫しつつ南方に国土を拡大（国土回復戦争），1137年からカタルーニャとともに連合王国となった。両国は法律，政治行政制度を変えることなく，支配者を共有する形をとった。13―14世紀にはバレンシアも加え，シチリア，サルデーニャなどを併合。1479年フェルナンド２世のときカスティリャ王国と合体し，スペイン統一国家の基礎となった。
