Italian director. Born in Trieste. Graduated from the National Academy of Dramatic Art, he founded the Masquerade in Switzerland during World War II and directed Camus' Caligula. Returning to Italy after the war, he founded the Piccolo Theater in Milan with P. Grassi in 1947 and directed it. He formed an independent theater company in 1968, but returned to the Piccolo in 1972. He has staged works by Goldoni, Shakespeare, Brecht, Chekhov, Pirandello, and others, creating new theatricality that connects the text and the audience in empirical and narrative stages, and has gained a reputation as a world-class director. In particular, Goldoni's Two Masters at Once has been touring theaters around the world, including Japan, on a record-breaking tour since 1947. He has also directed operas such as Mozart's Don Giovanni and Verdi's Simon Boccanegra, achieving notable success overseas. In 1983, he became the director of the Theatre de l'Europe, which was established in France, and continued to be active internationally.
