Earphones - Iyahon (English spelling) earphone

A type of transducer that converts electrical vibrations into sound waves, worn closely against the ear to transmit sound directly to the ear. It has also been called a receiver, but since the word receiver is often used to mean a receiver, to avoid confusion, it is no longer used as a term to refer to earphones.

Depending on how they are worn, they can be classified as insert earphones, supra-ear earphones, circumaural earphones, etc. Headphones are sometimes specifically called earphones that combine one or two earphones with a headband.

They have the advantage of being able to transmit sound only to the ear they are worn in, and being less susceptible to outside noise, etc. For these reasons, they have long been used for business purposes such as telephones and broadcasting, and as hearing aids for the hearing impaired, but now they are used in a very wide range of applications, including for personal music listening and learning, both indoors and outdoors.

電気的振動を音波に変える変換器の一種であって、耳に密接して装着することで、耳に直接音を伝えるようにしたもの。レシーバーとよばれたこともあるが、レシーバーは受信機の意味に使われることが多いので、混乱を避けるためにイヤホンをさす用語としては現在では使われない。

　装着の仕方により、挿入イヤホン、耳のせイヤホン、耳覆いイヤホンなどに分類される。一つまたは二つのイヤホンを頭にかけるバンドと組み合わせて使うようにしたものをとくにヘッドホンとよぶことがある。

　装着した耳にだけ音を伝えることができるうえ、外部の騒音の影響を受けにくいなどの利点がある。このため、電話や放送などの業務用、難聴者のための補聴器などに古くから使われてきたが、現在では個人の音楽鑑賞用、学習用などに室内、屋外を問わず利用されるなど、その範囲がきわめて広くなっている。
