Exeter

Japanese: エクセター(英語表記)Exeter
Exeter
It is the capital of Devon County in southwest England, England. It is part of the Exeter district. It is located about 60 km northeast of Plymouth, about 16 km upstream from the mouth of the River Exe, which flows into the English Channel. It was the center of the Dumnoni people, the indigenous people of England, but was occupied by the Romans in the mid-1st century and called Isca Dumnoniorum. As the central city of southwest England from the Anglo-Saxon period through the Middle Ages, it was constantly washed by the waves of drastic historical change, but in the Middle Ages many merchant guilds were formed and it developed as a commercial center. During the Elizabethan era, woolen manufacturing began, and at its peak, woolen production was second only to Leeds in the north of England, and the port prospered as a shipping port. It is the commercial center of the county, and many people work in the service industry, but industries such as metal processing, leather, papermaking, and agricultural machinery are also carried out. During World War II, the city suffered widespread damage from air raids, but historical buildings such as St. Peter's Cathedral, built in the mid-English Gothic style around 1275, and the 14th century Guildhall remain, making it a popular tourist destination. Exeter is also home to the University of Exeter (1922) and the Royal Albert Memorial Museum. Area 47 km2 . Population 115,200 (2004 estimate).
