...In the third volume of the Man'yoshu, there is an example of the term "Ikazuchi," where ika is the root of an adjective meaning "severe," and tsuchi is the name of a spirit associated with a snake, just like the tsuchi in "Mizuchi (蛟)." In the local dialect, it is called kandachi, which means a divine revelation, and amaru, which refers to a thunderbolt, is said to mean "amoru (descending from heaven)." Both of these indicate the idea that thunder is a god, and it was once believed that gods descended to this world with the light of purple lightning and gold wire....
