The capital of the Republic of Italy. Population 2,830,569 (1981). It is located on both banks of the lower reaches of the Tiber River, which originates in the central Apennine Mountains in central Italy. The city center is about 25 km from the mouth of the river, but the administrative territory of the city of Rome is exceptionally large among Italian cities, and includes Leonardo da Vinci Airport, the fishing port of Fiumicino, and the Lido di Roma bathing beach on the coast. The Lateran Agreement of 1929 established the Vatican City State (about 44 hectares) within the city limits. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
