Daly stated that there are two types of igneous rocks, granite and basalt, with the granite type being intrusive and the basalt type being extrusive [Daly: 1933]. Kennedy and Anderson classified igneous rocks into two associations, the volcanic association and the plutonic association [Kennedy & Anderson: 1938]. The volcanic association is formed in association with volcanic activity, and includes not only surface lava flows, but all intrusive bodies that are thought to have originated from the same magma in a series of volcanic activities. Gabbro can occur as very large intrusive bodies, and such gabbros are genetically treated as part of the same series as basaltic volcanic rocks, and are collectively referred to as the volcanic rock series. Plutonic associations consist of large intrusions of granite or granodiorite with associated small bodies of gabbro and pegmatite. Plutonic associations are found only in orogenic belts and include plutonic intrusions related to all orogenic movements.

デイリイは，火成岩には花崗岩と玄武岩の二つの型があり，花崗岩型は貫入岩であり，玄武岩型は噴出岩であるとした［Daly : 1933］．ケネデイとアンダーソンは火成岩を火山岩型（volcanic association）と深成岩型（plutonic association）の二つのアソシエーション（association）に分類した［Kennedy & Anderson : 1938］．火山岩型アソシエーションは火山活動に関連して生成されたもので，地表の熔岩流などばかりでなく，一連の火山活動に関係して同じマグマに由来すると考えられるすべての貫入岩体を含んでいる．斑糲(はんれい)岩は非常に大規模な貫入岩体として産出する場合があるが，このような斑糲岩は玄武岩質の火山岩と成因的には一連のものとして扱われ，一括して火山岩系列とされる．深成岩型アソシエーションは花崗岩や花崗閃緑岩の大きな貫入岩が主であって，それに伴われる斑糲岩やペグマタイトの小岩体を含んでいる．深成岩アソシエーションの産出は造山帯に限られており，すべての造山運動に関係する深成岩貫入岩体がふくまれている．
