When a substance (solute) that is a gas, liquid, or solid mixes with another liquid or solid to form a homogeneous phase mixture, that is, a solution. A liquid solution is called a solution, but if it is a solid it is called a solid solution. Mixing gases together is not usually called dissolution. It is different from "melting," which is when a solid is heated to turn it into a liquid.
