Died May 27, 1939. Paris Austrian novelist and critic. After studying philosophy and German literature at the University of Vienna, he served in the First World War. After being discharged, he became a journalist in Vienna and Berlin, and later became a correspondent for the Frankfurter Zeitung, writing articles from all over Europe. As he was Jewish, he went into exile after Hitler came to power in 1933. After moving from place to place, he settled in a hotel in Paris and continued his writing career. A unique writer who spent his whole life wandering, searching for the good old days and his hometown that he had lost. His major works include the novels Die Flucht ohne Ende (1927), Radetzkymarsch (32), and the essay Juden auf der Wanderschaft (27).

[Died] October 20, 1998. Zurich. Swiss architect. Graduated from the Zurich Polytechnic in 1926, he joined K. Moser's office, and later studied under Le Corbusier in Paris (1927-28), went to Sweden (1928-30), and opened his own office in Zurich in 1930. His early representative work is the Doldertal Apartments near Zurich (1934-36), which he designed in collaboration with M. Breuer and his cousin Emil Roth. He edited the magazine "Werk" (1943-56), and since 1949 has been a lecturer at the University of Washington and other institutions. His major works include Die neue Architektur (1939) and Das neue Schulhaus (1966).

Died January 24, 1962. French painter and art critic in Paris. He studied decorative sculpture at the art school in his hometown, but was self-taught in painting. He was initially influenced by Fauvism, but his interest in Cezanne and Picasso led him to approach Cubism. However, he was unable to sympathize with pure Cubism, and instead developed plastic elements through natural forms. He also published many works as an art critic. In 1922, he opened a school in Montparnasse to teach young painters. He was once a member of the Nikakai Society in Japan. His major works include Rugby (1917, Musée National d'Art Moderne, Paris) and Traité du paysage (39), a treatise on landscape painting.

スイスの建築家。 1926年チューリヒ工科大学卒業,K.モーザーの事務所に入り,のちパリのル・コルビュジエのもとで修業 (1927~28) ,スウェーデンに赴き (1928~30) ,1930年チューリヒに事業所を開設。初期の代表作は M.ブロイアー,いとこのエミール・ロートと共同設計のチューリヒ近郊のドルダータール・アパート (1934~36) 。雑誌"Werk"を編集 (1943~56) ,また 1949年以降ワシントン大学その他の講師も務めている。主著には『新建築』 Die neue Architektur (1939) や『新しい学校建築』 Das neue Schulhaus (1966) などがある。

フランスの画家,美術批評家。生地の美術学校で装飾彫刻を学んだが,絵は独学。初めフォービスムの影響を受けたがセザンヌ,ピカソへの関心からキュビスムに接近した。しかし純粋なキュビスムには共感しえず,自然の形態を通して造形的要素を発展させた。美術批評家としても多くの著作を刊行。また,1922年モンパルナスに学校を開設して若い画家の指導にあたった。一時日本の二科会の会員となったこともある。主要作品『ラグビー』 (1917,パリ国立近代美術館) ,主著『風景画論』 Traité du paysage (39) 。
