Rodo

Japanese: ロド
Rodo
Uruguayan writer and thinker. Born in the capital, Montevideo. In 1895, he participated in the editing of the National Journal of Literature and Social Sciences. The editorial board was a central figure in Latin American cultural activities, and Rodo himself wrote many articles for the journal. He also served as a professor of literature at the University of Montevideo, but left the faculty in 1901. He was elected to the National Congress in 1902 and 1908, and also served as director of the National Library. He was one of the founders of modernism in Latin America. His major work, Ariel (1900), can be considered a book of warning to young intellectuals in Latin America, and in opposition to the materialistic and utilitarian America, he defends Latin culture rooted in Mediterranean civilization and calls for the spiritual unity of Latin America. His other works include Motives of Proteo (1908) and Watchtower of Prosperity (1914). During World War I he went to Italy as a correspondent for an Argentine newspaper and died in Palermo.
