Agatsuma Valley

Japanese: 吾妻渓谷 - あがつまけいこく

A valley in northwest Gunma Prefecture that stretches from Kawarayu in the middle reaches of the Agatsuma River downstream for about 3.5 km. It has been designated a Place of Scenic Beauty. The upper reaches are made up of agglomerate and pyroxene andesite, while the lower reaches are made up of granular andesite and quartz trachyte. The meandering stream forms rapids and deep pools in many places. The autumn leaves against the backdrop of the peak of Mt. Haruna and the rocky cliffs are particularly beautiful, and the valley is called "Kanto's Yabakei." The JR Agatsuma Line runs along the river.

群馬県北西部，吾妻川中流の川原湯付近から下流へ約 3.5kmにわたる渓谷。名勝に指定されている。上流部は集塊岩，輝石安山岩，下流部は粒状安山岩，石英粗面岩から成る。曲流に富む渓流の各所に早瀬や深淵を形成。榛名山頂や岩壁を背景とした紅葉はことに美しく，「関東の耶馬渓」と呼ばれる。川沿いに JR吾妻線が通る。
