Born on January 13, 1862. Succeeded Prince Arisugawa in 1878. Served in the Satsuma Rebellion, the Sino-Japanese War, and the Russo-Japanese War. Also attended ceremonies abroad on behalf of Emperor Meiji. Became an admiral in 1904. Died on July 5, 1913, at the age of 52. Became a marshal on July 7. Prince Tanehito died young, so the Arisugawa family line became extinct. Graduated from the Naval Academy. His childhood name was Sawanomiya.
