A red basic dye with a xanthene skeleton. Rhodamine B is a representative example, but there are many derivatives such as Rhodamine 6G, 6GP, and 6G Extra. Soluble in water, ethanol (ethyl alcohol), and acetone. Soluble in sulfuric acid, but poorly soluble in hydrochloric acid and aqueous sodium hydroxide solution. In addition to dyeing wool, silk, nylon, cotton, and acrylic fibers, it is also used to color paper and miscellaneous goods. Its beautiful color tone makes it versatile. Rhodamine B is synthesized by condensing m(meta)-diethylaminophenol and phthalic anhydride. Lakes with metal salts are used as red organic pigments.
