National Atlas

Japanese: ナショナル･アトラス（英語表記）national atlas

A national atlas is an atlas that systematically depicts a country's nature, society, economy, culture, etc. using numerous maps based on reliable surveys and statistical data. Many national atlases are produced by national cartographical agencies, but some are also produced by national statistical agencies, academies, and universities. The contents of national atlases are as follows: (1) nature (geographical location, topography, geology, climate, land water, vegetation, oceans, etc.); (2) society (ethnic groups, population, residential patterns, etc.); (3) economy (land use, industry, transportation, finances, income, etc.); and (4) culture (language, religion, education, cultural assets, etc.). They generally consist of numerous thematic maps and their explanations.

一国の自然，社会，経済，文化などを，信頼度の高い調査，統計資料に基づく多数の地図を用いて体系的に表現した地図帳をナショナル･アトラス(国勢地図帳)と呼ぶ。各国のナショナル･アトラスをみると，国の地図作成機関が作成したものが多く，国の統計機関，アカデミー，大学などが作成したものもみられる。その内容は，(1)自然　地理的位置，地形，地質，気候，陸水，植生，海洋など，(2)社会　民族，人口，居住形態など，(3)経済　土地利用，産業，交通，財政，所得など，(4)文化　言語，宗教，教育，文化財などに及び，多数の主題図と，その解説で構成されるのが一般である。
